We live in a different age, but there are two anecdotes about rugby speeches resorting to Maori, or pretending to.
In 1960, the All Black team in South Africa took exception to a series of after-match speeches made in Afrikaans. Manager Tom Pearce once replied with a Maori speech - reciting Maori place names only.
And in 1974, at a post-match dinner on the tour of South Africa Andy Leslie's speech included a list of Maori place names and indicated that it meant they were "delighted to be here". The insult was not apparent to the Northern Transvaal audience.
