In 1958, after 11 All Black games, Bill Gray broke his leg badly. He got a bone infection and was threatened with amputation. He never played for the All Blacks again. However he returned to play a star role for the Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley-Counties team against the 1959 Lions.
Bill Gray played 6 tests, and earnt 21.43 era-adjusted caps.
