When the Lions played against West Coast-Buller on their 1959 tour the local team used a live kiwi as its team mascot - parading it around the field prior to kick-off.
It didn't help the locals - the Lions went on to win 58-3. For the record, they lost 5 matches out of 25 on the tour - including games to Canterbury and Otago, and 3 test matches whilst losing the test series 3-1.
