In the third test at Athletic Park against the touring 1971 Lions team medical student JPR Williams gave medical assistance to Bob Burgess, after he had swallowed his tongue. Burgess was ruled out of the 4th test, allowing North Otago's Phil Gard to earn his only test cap, and the last by a North Otago representative.
