In TP McLean's book 'The All Blacks' in 1991 he described John Kirwan as 'powerful as the village blacksmith', and following his form at the 1987 World Cup, he should be titled 'Sir Kirwan'. Twenty years later John Kirwan was knighted.

David Kirk wrote in a newspaper column before the 2007 World Cup loss that the All Blacks had a history of not performing when it really mattered, and predicted that the "same will happen again", perhaps due to being refereed more tightly.
