All Black Debutants

The recent test match against Japan involved 8 new All Black debutants. Not since 1986 when we had 10 test debutants have we given away so many new caps. But they were extenuating circumstances due to the suspension of the Cavaliers. Prior to that the All Blacks team against Australia in 1972 featured 8 debutants also. This was prompted by new coach Bob Duff, and many defections after the 1971 Lions series. Notable mentions include 1955 where 8 debutants took the field, 1951 where 9 debutants were used, and of course 1949 when two separate All Black teams were selected, for a record 13 debutants. But the difference with all of these prior records was that most of them had played for the All Blacks before, but not earned a test cap. Therefore, by our records the 8 debutants this year sets a significant precedent in terms of debutants.
